A domain name is your own memorable address on the internet. It helps people find your website and lets you use email addresses based on your name or business. You do not need a company or a large website: a domain is just as useful for an individual, family, hobby group or association.
You can start with a simple introduction page and expand later. The same domain can stay with you for years, even when your website's design or hosting provider changes.
What is a domain name?
A domain name is a readable internet name. For example, example.com shows the structure: a chosen name followed by an extension such as .com. This is an illustration, not a promise of availability; always check the name you actually want separately.
A domain name is not a website or disk space for storing files. It is an address that points to a service. The same domain can be used for a website, email and separate subdomains.
The address and its contents are different: think of the domain as a street address, web hosting as space for your website's files, and DNS as the directory that tells the internet where the right service can be found.
What can an everyday user do with a domain?
- A personal website: introduce yourself, your contact details and your interests at one memorable address.
- A blog or hobby site: share recipes, travel stories, crafts, technical projects or news from your gaming group.
- A photo gallery or portfolio: bring together your photography, artwork, music or examples of your work.
- A club or association website: publish activities, events and contact information.
- A business website or online shop: present your services or build a shop using suitable website software and hosting.
- Your own email address: use a format such as

You do not have to know how to program. Software such as WordPress or Joomla can be used with suitable hosting once installed. Registering a domain does not, by itself, build a website, install an online shop or create every mailbox you want.
What else do you need besides the domain?
- Domain registration: reserves an available name for your use for a fixed term. You must renew the registration if you want to keep using the name.
- DNS or name service: points the domain to your website and email service. DNS can be provided by us or another provider.
- Web hosting or another website service: stores your website's files and application. You do not need to build a site immediately just to register a name.
- Email hosting: is needed to send and receive mail at your domain's addresses. It may be included in your chosen service package.

How do you choose a good name?
Choose a name that is easy to spell, remember and tell another person. It could be based on your own name, hobby, association or business. Consider how it will look in an email address and whether it will still suit your needs later.
Check availability and choose from the extensions offered in the shop. Different extensions have their own registration requirements and prices. In particular, review the .fi domain requirements if you choose the Finnish extension.

What makes up the price?
The domain registration price depends on the extension and registration term. In addition, you pay for your chosen service package, such as TrcNeT-DNS name service or web hosting.
The TrcNeT-DNS card shows the shop's current package price. The domain registration charge and other options are shown on the product page for your chosen extension. Review the complete order and final price at checkout before paying.
How to get started
- Choose a suitable name and check its availability.
- Select the extension and the services you need in the shop. Create an account or sign in and enter the requested registration details carefully.
- Review the order and terms at checkout. Registration starts after payment is confirmed; completion also depends on registry acceptance and availability at the time of registration.
- Follow the domain details in My Account. Set up your website and email using the instructions for your chosen package. Cached DNS records can delay when changes become visible.

Keep your address active and your data safe
Renew your domain registration when needed and keep customer and contact information up to date. Domain registration validity and the terms of related service packages are separate: renewing web hosting, for example, does not itself renew the domain.
A domain name does not automatically make its contents private. Publish only information you intend to share and arrange authentication for private photos or other restricted material where needed. Keep your website software updated, use strong credentials and back up important data.
